Fraudsters are getting more and more innovative with every passing day, which is why you always need to keep your guard up.
Recently, fraudsters have come up with a new way of tricking you of your hard-earned money, and we’d like to alert you about it.
This is how they do it:
- The fraudster calls up the customer offering a high-end rewards/dining credit card
- The fraudster send an APK (Android Package Kit) link to get the credentials for the customer’s registration for the offer. If the customer clicks on the link/downloads the app – the fraudster will get access to the customer’s phone and all the data in it, which is then misused.
- If the customer has a mobile phone that doesn’t support the APK link, the smart fraudster informs the customer that he will send them a new compatible mobile as a gift, so that they can apply for the rewards card.
- The customer is happy to get a complimentary phone so readily agrees to this.
- The customer is unaware that the new phone will come to him with a preloaded app (.secure). As soon as the customer inserts his existing SIM into the new phone, an OTP will be generated as part of the registration process.
- Once the OTP is shared by the customer, the fraudster gains full access to the data in the new mobile and uses this to make transactions.
How can you be safe against frauds of this kind?
- Do not click on any unknown link or install any unknown app/APK.
- Any caller that requests for an OTP should ring alarm bells in your head.
- Never insert your SIM into any unknown device.
- Fraudsters may call claiming to be bank employees. They may share details such as Employee Number, the branch they are calling from and so on.
- Stay alert, as NO bank employee will ask you for your sensitive bank and personal details.
- Avoid storing your card number, passwords or any other personal/sensitive information on websites.
- Always visit the bank’s official website to verify the numbers.
